In The IT Crowd, Jen Barber (Katherine Parkinson), the self-anointed “ relationship manager” for Reynholm Industries' IT Department, is tasked. Jen Barber works as Relationship Manager for the IT Department of Reynholm Industries. Whenever Jen leaves Roy and Moss for whatever reason, the department is sent into chaos and peace is not restored until Jen's return. She had an interview with the Head of Reynholm Industries. Linehan reflected that the service was a hindrance, as it was such a "stuffy, businesslike service that I think it actually ended up making everyone self-conscious"; however, there was no suitable alternative. Despite this, the writers did formulate ideas for stories, with Linehan believing that it could work out.
Ultimately due to Linehan's schedule and budget the fifth series was shelved. Due to the actors' schedules and Linehan being busy with his TV adaptation of Count Arthur Strongas well as working on The Walshesit was not until June that they were able to film the episode.
Chris O'Dowd Roy is a work-shy Irish IT technician who spends most of his time playing video games or reading comics in the office. O'Dowd said that Roy is slightly more capable of talking to people than Moss, but is still a man-child and slightly socially inept.

Critic Boyd Hilton has said that Roy thinks he is on the cool edge of nerdiness. Author Cory Doctorow said that Roy's snark and misanthropy is identifiable to a certain tribe of nerds.
Regarding his friendship with Moss, O'Dowd said that it is seems as if they met in college. Linehan likened the two to year-olds who like spending time with each other. Linehan said he originally thought the role should not be played by an Irish person, but that O'Dowd was the best man for the job, especially appreciating his physical performances. Moss has some quirky habits: He switches through glasses of various sizes in reaction when he and Roy scheme; when his ears get hot, he sprays them with a bottle; [a]  he uses inhalers ; [k] he can detect chemicals such as rohypnol by smell.
