Yuuta and Kaneko get into another a few days later after the former claims to have seen Magical Detective Loveline, unbeknownst it was Nanako dressed in disguise.

Yu dresses up in Teddie's costume to stop the fight, and when he goes home in the costume, he crosses paths with Nanako and his friends. Later, as he heads to the shrine, he finds an old woman, Hisano Kurodaunconscious after she has been mugged, and he accompanies her to the hospital where her attending nurse Sayoko Uehara flirts with Yu. Some days later after a tutoring session, Shu reveals that he dislikes going to school and has no friends.

During an impromptu date Yu gets dragged into, Sayoko reveals her dismay that as a nurse everyone she meets at work leaves as soon as they get better. Meeting with her, Eri reveals to Yu her stress at the strained relationship with Yuuta. Finding her, Kuroda says to Yu that she is tired of being reminded of her deceased husband and throws a decorative comb he gave her into the river, and a large carp jumps out of the water with the comb stuck in its fins as soon as she leaves.

During the summer festival, after having caught the carp, he returns the comb to Kuroda, saying she should not be throwing away memories. Yu also sees Shu, who stole fireworks from the display because none of his classmates invited him to go see them, but Yu gives him a reversi set as a birthday gift and reminds him that two people are needed to play the game. He then finds Eri, who has been badly hurt after stepping in the way of Yuuta getting hit by a purse during another fight.

Yu calls Sayoko who walks him through the steps of getting Eri better. Yu is thanked by those he has helped out over the past few weeks. The next day, the local shrine has gotten an excess of donations, which the Fox lets Yu use to buy a new umbrella for Nanako.

However the hotel they will be staying in has been repurchased from a less-than-reputable organization. Teddie, waiting for the gang there, wants to score a date with Yukiko, which she agrees to do so during free time the following day.

While the girls enjoy the rotating waterbed in their room, the boys have a more turbulent experience with their waterbed. The next day, the group split up while wandering the island. Yu catches up with Chie who is defending a young boy from thugs, later revealing to Yu that she wants to find meaning in her self-worth, of which he admires in her.

The group reunites at a night club, seeing Naoto there. As they all enjoy free food and drinks, it seems that they were served alcohol and have been acting out of character during a drinking game. Naoto has a family history of being detectives that help the police and then requests that they reveal their involvement in the murders. Although Yukiko blurts out that that they go into the TV to fight Shadows with their Personas, Naoto believes she is mocking the idea.

The next day, the gang enjoys lunch together before leaving for Inaba. Back in Inaba, Naoto talks on the phone to someone, requesting some more information on the self-styled gang and the Midnight Channel.

Naoto appears on the news to say that there are incongruities in the murder case and that it is still under investigation. The next day after school, Naoto approaches the gang and interrogates their involvement in the murder case. Naoto tells them that they are not seen as possible suspects, but as pawns in the game. Naoto goes on to reveal that Morooka's murder was the only one that sticks out, as he never appeared on television and never disappeared before his body was discovered, having a blunt force to the head as the cause of death.

At night, Naoto appears on the Midnight Channel, and announces an experimental operation to be born anew. When the group goes to the television world the next day, they are unable to find Naoto. As they return to the real world, the group splits up in search of Naoto. According to Aika, Naoto had gotten into an argument with Adachi of how to handle the murder case.

The group heads back to the television world, bringing them to a secret laboratory. However, the other self reveals that Naoto is insecure about being seen only as a child, rather than an adult detective, aside from the fact that Naoto is really a girl. This causes Naoto to reject her other self, transforming it into a Shadow. Yukiko represents the player's Social Link to The Priestess. The translation of these jokes to the English version was noted to be difficult by the Atlus staff.

As the group searches for him, Teddie remembers that he was actually a Shadow, one who wanted humans to like him and, as a result, erased his memory and took the form of a cartoonish bear. Teddie is playable alongside Kintoki-Douji.

Naoto also decides that she isn't a detective just to uphold her family tradition, but because she wants to be and thoroughly enjoy it no matter her gender or age. Juria Kawakami portrays Naoto in the stage production. Shadow of the Labyrinth: Zen is a taciturn young man who is unfamiliar with people's habits and has a tendency to take things too literally, but is otherwise devoted to Rei's well-being, while Rei is a cheerful and innocent girl who has a strange metabolism that causes her to be forever hungry.

Depending on which protagonist was chosen at the start, either SEES or the Investigation Team will encounter them first. If the Persona 3 Protagonist is chosen, then Fuuka locates the first labyrinth somewhere near where the team is gathered by picking up on Shadow signals.

However, before they can enter, Zen and Rei appear and interrupt them. Since they intend to enter a maze which doubles as a Shadows' nest, the Protagonist allows them to join SEES for the time being. After she died as well, Namatame tried to contact the police and Tohru Adachi tricked him into throwing people into the TV to "protect" them from the killer; after the victims began to turn up alive after his kidnappings, he believed he was truly helping them.

He often accidentally reveals crucial information regarding the investigation to the protagonist, and is constantly reprimanded by Dojima for running his mouth. Their basic plot elements being so similar, the primary difference between Persona 3 and Persona 4's storytelling lies in the treatment of its cast, particularly in Persona 4, and especially in the role the protagonist plays in relating to those around him. In Persona 3, the protagonist is almost a literal blank slate.

Only much later in the plot does he gain any sort of background. Even then, it serves merely as a point of trivia to explain the character's power.

It certainly makes sense within the story, but Persona 3's lead is very much a man living in the present. With nothing behind him, he only looks to the future, the top of Tartarus, and the end of his journey.

By contrast, Persona 4's protagonist is not a blank slate.

He's moved to Inaba because his parents are working abroad. He came from the Big City, and in a year, he will be going back to it, by hook or by crook. While these details are superficial at best, they matter. They give the cast something to work with as they interact with the protagonist.

They reference his background when talking about how boring Inaba must be compared to the city. Most importantly, these details give them cause to wonder why exactly he is the Wild Card. That little mystery sits in the back of the player's mind until the final big reveal, turning it into a giant "OH SNAP" moment.

The most important part of Persona 3 and 4's gameplay are the Social Links, the relationships formed and developed by the protagonist with the people around him. They affect everything from the daily routine to the party's battle performance.

Thus, the hero's role in interaction with his friends is critical to the games' storytelling. Persona 3's hero is active in his friends' affairs, his telling them exactly what they need to hear helping them overcome challenges, and his drawing power from their support. This is not to say that his relationships are formed out of mercenary selfishness, but more that the story is singularly focused in him and his circumstances. That's quite appropriate, since the game itself is closely connected to that tarot-based metaphor for life, The Fool's Journeyand there can be only one Fool.

Sadly, The Fool's Journey has an end, namely with the protagonist's messianic self-sacrifice.

His friends however, do not end their journey, as shown in "The Answer". Rather than finding themselves, they're left hanging, their leader's departure unexplained. Only after finding out why do they get to move on, clinging to hope and honoring his sacrifice. In the end, the cast is treated as secondary to the protagonist's journey.

By contrast, the protagonist of Persona 4 is nothing without his friends. He plays no role without them. They can't be replaced with inanimate objects without completely undermining the plot. Unlike Persona 3's lead, the boy from the city is utterly passive outside of combat.

The protagonist interacts with his friends less as a savior than an enabler. He is a listener that cast can spill out their hearts to, a supporter that simply by his presence allows them to confront their secrets and accept themselves, by themselves. Every major event involves a character coming to terms with his or her shadow. Every dungeon is associated with a character character's shadow. Acquiring one's persona is just the first step on the road to self-awareness, simply a promise to start dealing with the issues that led to those dungeons and boss fights in the first place.

And the player is never, ever left alone over the course of the game.
